Chris Holm

Chris Holm (b.1963)  is an American painter whose work explores the intersection of observation, memory, and emotion through the expressive possibilities of oil paint. Moving between landscapes, scenes drawn from personal experience, and works that engage with contemporary social and environmental concerns, Holm approaches each subject as an opportunity to look beyond its visible form and consider the ideas and emotions it carries.

Born in Illinois, Holm later moved to Arizona and studied computer graphics at Arizona State University, where enduring interests in painting, sculpture, and art history became increasingly central to his creative life. Over more than two decades, he has developed his practice through sustained experimentation with oil painting and an intensive study of the techniques and visual language of historical masters. This foundation is balanced by a willingness to move between subjects and approaches, allowing the idea behind each painting to shape its visual language.

Whether contemplating the beauty of the natural world or confronting the more complicated realities of contemporary life, Holm is drawn to painting’s ability to make something intangible visible. Through atmosphere, color, composition, and symbolism, he seeks to create images that linger beyond their immediate subject by awakening a memory, a question, or an emotional recognition that the viewer brings to the work. For Holm, the painting is ultimately not the conclusion of an idea, but the beginning of a conversation.

Artist Statement:

My work begins with the subject and the possibilities it presents. I value the discipline of oil painting and the depth of its tradition, while allowing each painting to develop according to its own character and purpose.

My late mentor, Leonard Lehrer, once described making art as “a pure privilege to be part of this most remarkable language system.” His words have stayed with me and continue to shape the way I think about painting.

I do not confine my work to a single subject or method. Inspiration may come from the natural world, the persistence of a memory, or the social and environmental realities of contemporary life. Ultimately, I want the work to reach beyond what it depicts: to invite reflection and leave space for the viewer to discover a meaning of their own.
