Red Zone by Chris Holm, Painting, Oil on Canvas, Size: 48 x 48 inches

In Red Zone, Chris Holm reflects on the human experience of the COVID-19 pandemic through the image of a masked medical professional set against an intense red field. Portions of the figure appear fractured and dissolve into the surrounding color, suggesting the physical and psychological toll endured by healthcare workers at the height of the crisis. The saturated red evokes both the urgency of a medical danger zone and the atmosphere of uncertainty that defined the period. Moving between representation and abstraction, Holm transforms an image associated with a specific historical moment into a broader meditation on vulnerability, endurance, and the human cost of caring for others in times of crisis.
