The children had been planning their show for weeks, but they kept the most important part a secret from their parents.

They had invented funny costumes, practiced their grand entrances, filled baskets with flowers, and decided that everyone in the show should look completely different. That was the point. Their play was about children everywhere and about one thing they believed every child in the world should have: a friend.

At the end of the performance, the children turned to their parents in the audience and announced their big idea.

“Adults have a superpower,” they explained. “You can drive cars, build houses, travel anywhere, make phone calls, and somehow find things we lose. So surely you can help children who are lonely find someone to play with!”

The parents laughed and clapped. 

And perhaps that was the real ending of the play: not the applause, but the possibility that somewhere, because of it, one lonely child might find a friend.
